Bipolar Disorder: Bipolar Disorder is characterised by cycling episodes of depression and mania. The episodes of depression are characterised by depressed mood, loss of interest and pleasure and possible suicidal ideation, change in appetite or sleep, loss of energy and so forth. By contrast, the episodes of mania are characterised by distinct periods of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive or irritable mood. Both depressed and manic episodes create risk for the sufferer due to risk of suicide and self-harm during the depressed episode, and poor decision making during a manic episode.
