Separation and Divorce – Claire Pang

Claire Pang    Quals: B Psych Hons, Master of Clinical Psychology

Separation and Divorce: Separation and divorce can be highly stressful and often leaves the separating couple, their children and family members on an emotional roller coaster. When one partner has decided to leave and the other does not, the initiators may seek relief from feeling guilty of hurting his or her partner. On the other hand, the non-initiators often respond with a sense of shock, disbelief and helplessness over the decision process when they first hear that their relationship is over.

Counseling can offer a chance to examine the relationship without blaming each other. Once both parties acknowledge that their relationship is over, mourning the loss can leave both feeling profoundly lonely, sad and angry. In addition to the grieving process, the separating couple also faces many transition challenges ahead such as custody arrangements, financial settlements, re-establishing social networks and learning to be single again.

Counselling Approach:  Claire is a Clinical Psychologist with specialist training in treating depression, anxiety, trauma and complex mental health conditions. She is result-orientated, practicing a wide range of therapeutic approaches with great success. In the case of separation counselling, she adopts an integrated approach with a range of effective relationship counselling techniques to help couples and individuals defuse emotional distress, enhance effective communication with their spouse, facilitate co-parenting, enhance decision-making abilities and develop self-confidence in being single again.

Phobias – Nicole Wimmer

Nicole Wimmer    Quals: B Sc (Psych), MA (Psych), PG Cert Mgmt, Grad Dip Safety Science, MAPS.

Phobias (Agoraphobia): Agoraphobia in the most general terms is a fear of being in public places. It is an anxiety disorder and in the most severe cases, people suffering from this disorder are housebound. Typically, it starts off as a mild anxiety about a particular place or situation that escalates over time into a generalised fear of being in public. Agoraphobia is a disabling fear. It is associated with panic attacks and anxiety. Often the reason behind the person not being able to be in public places, or leave the perceived safety or their own homes is the fear of having a panic attack, of losing ‘control’ or embarrassing themselves.

Counselling Approach: Nicole has a relaxed and engaging approach to therapy, and draws on a variety of evidence-based approaches to individually tailor a plan to suit each client. Her therapeutic orientation is a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).

For obvious reasons, a person suffering from agoraphobia’s ability to attend treatment is limited. Nicole is able to assist by offering the option of home visits initially (Gold Coast, Tweed Heads and Brisbane) until a person is able to attend the clinic.

Fees:   Usually $180/hr and inital appointments $220 hr. Medicare and health rebates may apply.  Evening appointments available.  For reduced rates please contact reception.

Mindfulness – Susanne Gilmour

Susanne Gilmour     Quals: BA, Cert Teach, Grad Dip Social Science, Grad Dip Psych, Assoc MAPS.

Mindfulness: Mindfulness is a new/old evidence-based approach to help clients overcome mood disorders, trauma and stress. Countless individuals from the dawn of time have found relief from negative emotions by focusing on the senses to bring about deep enjoyment of the current moment. We can experience this anywhere, at any time … working “in the flow”, walking on the beach, fishing, trekking in beautiful landscapes, making love, cooking for pleasure, creating art and so much more where we fully focus on our senses and the moment.

Counselling Approach: Susanne Gilmour is an experienced psychologist, who enjoys teaching people how to go into this state at will, to “down-regulate” and calm the mind with focused breathing and attention to the experiences perceived in the moment through all five senses.

Grief and Loss Counselling – Amanda Hansen

Amanda Hansen   Quals: B Psych, MAPS

Grief and Loss Counselling:  Whilst we most commonly associate the loss of a loved one with feelings of grief, other events can cause these same feelings. These can include the loss of employment, a relationship breakdown, loss of a friendship, illness, and even the loss of a pet.

Loss is a deeply personal experience, rarely following a predictable schedule, and presenting unique reactions for each individual. Grief is not a linear process, and most often people experience grief in waves of emotion.

Counselling Approach: Amanda can assist you through grief and loss by helping you to process your feelings, implement strategies to help you cope with the loss you have experienced, and by providing emotional support during a difficult time.

Adjustment to Change – Susanne Gilmour

Susanne Gilmour     Quals: BA, Cert Teach, Grad Dip Social Science, Grad Dip Psych, Assoc MAPS.

Adjustment to Change: For most people, change involves some degree of stress. Some individuals can find life changes – such as marrying or entering into a live-in relationship with their partner; becoming a parent; moving house, city and/or country; separation, divorce or widowhood; moving to a new school; or starting a new job – so stressful, that an “adjustment disorder” may develop.

Counselling Approach: A psychologist with many years of experience, Susanne Gilmour has found that with support and counsel, her clients have found that the mood experienced (similar to depression and anxiety) is  usually short-lived, unless there is some trauma in the background. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is particularly effective in treating most adjustment disorders.
