Self Harm – Susanne Gilmour

Susanne Gilmour     Quals: BA, Cert Teach, Grad Dip Social Science, Grad Dip Psych, Assoc MAPS.

Self Harm: The apparent increase in self-harming behaviours in the young, who are not otherwise suffering from trauma or developing a serious mental illness, is of great concern to parents and those who work with young people.

Our young people are tackling the challenges of puberty and transition to adulthood in an increasingly complex world and competitive, individualistic society. Emotions such as anger, fear, sadness, self-loathing and loss can be overwhelming for some young people, so self harming may relieve, in the short-term, the build-up of inexplicable and discomforting tension in the body and may become an addictive behaviour.

Counselling Approach: Susanne Gilmour is experienced in working with young people and their families. When self harm is the presenting issue, Susanne has found that improving communication, helping the young person to identify and safely express negative feelings by implementing more helpful strategies, can greatly reduce and relieve their emotional distress.

People have often sought medical attention only to be told that there is no medical reason for their symptoms. People often dread the next attack and sometimes avoid places or situations where they have had panic attacks.

Separation and Divorce – Claire Pang

Claire Pang    Quals: B Psych Hons, Master of Clinical Psychology

Separation and Divorce: Separation and divorce can be highly stressful and often leaves the separating couple, their children and family members on an emotional roller coaster. When one partner has decided to leave and the other does not, the initiators may seek relief from feeling guilty of hurting his or her partner. On the other hand, the non-initiators often respond with a sense of shock, disbelief and helplessness over the decision process when they first hear that their relationship is over.

Counseling can offer a chance to examine the relationship without blaming each other. Once both parties acknowledge that their relationship is over, mourning the loss can leave both feeling profoundly lonely, sad and angry. In addition to the grieving process, the separating couple also faces many transition challenges ahead such as custody arrangements, financial settlements, re-establishing social networks and learning to be single again.

Counselling Approach:  Claire is a Clinical Psychologist with specialist training in treating depression, anxiety, trauma and complex mental health conditions. She is result-orientated, practicing a wide range of therapeutic approaches with great success. In the case of separation counselling, she adopts an integrated approach with a range of effective relationship counselling techniques to help couples and individuals defuse emotional distress, enhance effective communication with their spouse, facilitate co-parenting, enhance decision-making abilities and develop self-confidence in being single again.

Addictions Counselling – Dr David Wells

Dr David Wells      Quals: B Psych (Hons), Dip Prof Couns, D Psych (Clin Geropsychology).

Addictions Counselling: Behaviours that are not good for us are easy to acquire. Alcohol is legal, so is tobacco smoking. But it is very simple for these behaviours and others to become bad for us. Bad for our health, relationships, work lives and for the individual. We may drift into behaviours that are not legal or socially outdated. When these behaviours become a problem, we need help.

Counselling Approach: First up is admitting that there is a problem. Many clients find this a problem, although other people telling you it is a problem is a good sign. Having admitted the issue, it is important to recognise that you have done well already, and that changing behaviour is the next goal. It may be small steps to begin with, but with a good therapist by your side, anything is achievable. Work in this area of human behaviour is about noticing the good work that has been done, and learning from any backward steps that are taken.
