Life Coaching – Vivian Jarrett

Vivian Jarrett    Quals: B Psych (hons), GCert Res Com, MAPS, MAICD

**Finalist Telstra Business Women’s Awards 2017 – Entrepreneur

Life Coaching: To achieve the most with our time is a challenge. Relationships, work, hobbies, habits, goals and barriers inevitably get in the way. It can be refreshing and spark creativity to talk about your  life, where you are going, where you have been and evaluate how to best overcome barriers. If you have become “stuck” then often it can be because your circle of support may not provide you with new ways of thinking and new strategies. If you are looking to enhance your life then life coaching may be something you try as a way to see if you are on track. As a psychologist I can offer research based information on what helps or hinders achieving life’s goals. All of life is a balancing act and getting that balance right takes time to master.

Counselling Approach: I enjoy hearing a person’s life story and working through what has been, to what is now and then working through what could be. Often I find that clients are unaware of some of the barriers that may prevent future success. Relationships, finances, skills, time and knowledge all can help or hinder just depending on your focus.

Narrative Therapy – Vivian Jarrett

Vivian Jarrett    Quals: B Psych (hons), GCert Res Com, MAPS, MAICD

Narrative Therapy: is an approach that has been used by innovative therapists in Australian and New Zealand.  The Dulwich Centre in Adelaide is the birth place of narrative practice in Australia.  Narrative therapy is considered to be highly adaptive in counselling within indigenous, spiritual or culturally diverse contexts.

Counselling Approach: Vivian utilises Narrative Therapy in her day to day counselling as a innovative tool to explore life’s curious events and hurdles.  Exploring your life story can open new horizons and assist with rewriting your future.  The past has been lived chapter by chapter but the future is unwritten. With support our identity, our hopes and dreams are often disclosed in the same way that we might look through jewellery box of our family heirlooms.  Sometimes we are quick to discard the things that may be most valuable, or most treasured.

Childhood – 5 to 12 years – Joey Tai

Joey Tai     Quals: BA Psych (hons), Master of Clinical Psychology.

Childhood – 5 to 12 years: Often children present their parents with the challenge of both emotional and behavioural difficulties, simultaneously. To differentiate ‘naughty’ behaviour from behaviour that is signalling a child’s emotional distress can be hard to determine. With support and information, parents can discover the best way to manage each. Joy Tai is a child psychologist who can help identify the issues at hand, and strategies to manage them, to help children and their families.

Counselling Approach: Joey is experienced in working with children, youth and young adults. He believes that many of their difficulties may stem from the home environment and seeks to address their difficulties at a family-systems level. He is also proficient in providing psychometric assessments if necessary. Joey also uses play therapy as a way of engaging with children, and understanding their core difficulties.

Joey Tai (2)Availability: Usually within a week; evening appointments are also available.

Christian Counselling – Vivian Jarrett

Vivian Jarrett    Quals: B Psych (hons), GCert Res Com, MAPS, MAICD

**Finalist Telstra Business Women’s Awards 2017 – Entrepreneur

Christian Counselling: Christian based counselling approaches are frequently requested when individuals are closely aligned with a particular faith or when they are considering changing or leaving a church. The Christian culture is often or primary importance when discussing the meaning of life, making important decisions, raising a family and dealing with life’s problems. I prefer to adults, although I do see children and adolescents with psychotic disorders such as bipolar.

Counselling Approach:  I have a solution focused approach to Christian or faith based counselling. Each individual will struggle with how their beliefs may differ with those of their church, their family and God. Often the way individuals think of God can be influenced by how they have been treated by others in their faith. It can be helpful to have a non-judgemental space to discuss the differences, and establish what is important to make positive change and regain control of life. I welcome individuals and couples to attend. I have additional expertise in Christian Sex Therapy for couples wanting to enhance intimacy.

Depression – Dr Amanda White

Dr Amanda White   Quals: PhD, B Psych (Hons), B Beh Sc, DipH, MAPS.

Depression: Low mood reflects feelings of sadness, irritability, guilt, hopelessness, and helplessness. This depression can result in substantial changes to the way a person thinks, feels, and behaves – often causing an avoidance of activities previously found enjoyable, causing mood to worsen over time. Depression can follow the stressors associated with life changes, from a genetic predisposition to mood disorders, or as a symptom associated with physical health problems, such as hyperthyroidism.

Counselling Approach: Treatment for depression can be quite diverse, which reflects the diversity of people who suffer from this common mood disorder.  I work with adults (late teens to seniors) as an eclectic-base therapist to develop tailored treatment plans that best suits the clients’ way of working and treatment goals. Successful outcomes can be reached through interpersonal and cognitive behavioural therapies, as well as motivational holistic programs that may include such areas as fitness, nutrition, music, and art.

Current Availability: Dr White’s books are currently closed to new clients. Please Visit the M1 Psychology website for details on other suitable psychologists.

Fees: Usually $220 for 50 min consultations. Initial Consultation $260.

Hypnotherapy – Dr Amanda White

Dr Amanda White certified hypnotherapistDr Amanda White   Quals: PhD, B Psych (Hons), B Beh Sc, DipH, MAPS.

Hypnotherapy: Human beings regularly and naturally alter our states of consciousness. Consider, for example, the differences between feeling alert, daydreaming, reading a good book or watching TV, and sleep. Hypnosis, an experience entered into through a process termed induction, sets up a state of consciousness where we feel relaxed, responsive, and receptive to suggestion.

Hypnosis is thought to engage with those unconscious, automatic processes that we may define behaviourally as habits, or emotionally as our reactive self. It may be useful to look at such habits or reactivity as our unconscious mind’s attempt at finding a solution to a life problem.

Hypnotherapy is simply a form of psychotherapy conducted whilst the client is in a state of hypnosis. As is generally the case with psychological care the aim is beneficial change, but here the mechanism for change bypasses the conscious, logical mind and focuses instead on altering motivations and behaviours at an unconscious level. As part of therapy clients may also be educated in self-hypnotic conditioning.

If you are change ready, and researching this topic suggests you may well be contemplating a way to address something in your life, then hypnotherapy with a professional hypnotherapist could be a viable way to move forward with new and adaptive life solutions.  Bulimia and smoking cessation are areas where hypnotherapy has well-validated treatment outcomes.  Other areas relevant for hypnotherapy treatment include stress and emotional regulation, insomnia, subclinical depression, anxiety, difficulties with a habit, addiction, and improving wellbeing.

Counselling Approach: Dr Amanda White offers tailored treatment plans using evidence-based therapy. Amanda is certified with the American Board of Hypnotherapy, and employs both the Ericksonian model of hypnotherapy and Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (CBH), although direct suggestion techniques can also be utilised depending on client needs. Often hypnotherapy is integrated as part of an eclectic treatment model. In this way, clients are asked to engage in other active therapeutic domains in a supported and more comprehensive treatment setting.

Pregnancy Counselling – Vivian Jarrett

Vivian Jarrett    Quals: B Psych (hons), GCert Res Com, MAPS, MAICD

**Finalist Telstra Business Women’s Awards 2017 – Entrepreneur

Pregnancy Counselling: Becoming pregnant for many is a very exciting time in their lives. Social support is very important to maintain mental health in pregnancy. About one third of women will experience significant mental health complications during pregnancy such as depression and anxiety. Fear of the birth and fear of being a “good” parent can over-shadow the positive experience of pregnancy.  Some women will experience physical complications with the pregnancy, baby and weird and strange medical problems can arise out of the blue. This disrupts family, relationships, career development and financial stability.  More serious complications such as miscarriage, stillbirth, birth trauma can affect women indefinitely.

Counselling Approach:  I prefer to see women during pregnancy because it is the best time to reduce mental health symptoms, develop coping strategies that will endure through the birth and beyond. Discussing the transition to parenthood, the struggles with physical changes and how to manage careers and family are all important to discuss during pregnancy. It is much harder once baby arrives as the baby’s needs can compound the problems with lack of sleep, etc. Non-directive counselling is funded by Medicare for 3 x 30 min sessions with “pregnancy counselling” referral through you GP. I have expertise in managing more severe depression and bipolar during pregnancy and can do home visits if needed. I’m very happy to work with you GP and/or psychiatrist if that is preferred.
