Anxiety Disorders – Dr Laurie Lumsden

Anxiety Disorders: While everyone feels anxious from time to time, some people experience these feelings so often and/or so strongly that it can affect their everyday lives. Often people confuse anxiety disorders with stress. Stress is a normal reaction to a situation where a person feels under pressure. For example, it’s common for people to feel stressed or uptight when meeting work deadlines, sitting exams or speaking in front of a group of people. However, for some people these feelings are ongoing, happening for no apparent reason, or continue after the stressful event has passed.

Counselling Approach:  The way in which anxiety disorders develop is explained through Social Learning Theory. This is a blame free/weakness free approach. Through CBT techniques, triggers for dysfunctional thinking are identified and strategies developed to avoid and/or deal with the triggers. Relaxation and grounding skills are taught.  elapse prevention is planned and rehearsed. Relapse is viewed as an opportunity to debrief strategies, identify what went wrong and to strengthen them. Relapse is not failuremjust progress towards recovery.
