Anger Management: Anger is normal, but sometimes the behaviours that go with that anger are damaging to ourselves, others or property. It is these wrong behaviours that we seek to alter in anger management.

Counselling Approach: Awareness and the earnest desire to change are important factors in anger management. It is about learning to behave in the way that we want to behave, not the way we behave by default. The key is: STOP – Think – Then do or speak; and by thinking can we soften the response to the situation that has made us angry.

Anger Management: Why do I get angry all the time? Anger is often associated with the frustration of being unable to get what you want from others, or it can be caused from miscommunication. Many people with a history of anger issues often feel stuck and frustrated with themselves and others. Consequently, their aggressive behaviours push their partners, children and friends away.

To deal with anger, some believe that venting out can help them calm down; conversely, others deal with anger by suppressing their frustration. Research shows that outward expression can actually escalate aggressive behaviours that may result in interpersonal relationship problems and also negatively impact other important areas of life.  Unmanaged anger can also cause health problems such as headaches, insomnia, increased anxiety, depression and heart attacks.

Counselling Approach: Claire is a Clinical Psychologist with specialist training in treating depression, anxiety, trauma and complex mental health conditions, and special interest in anger management counseling. It has been an immensely rewarding experience for her to witness clients benefiting from anger management counseling.  They are not only able to use strategies to manage their anger, but also able to develop more fulfilling relationships with significant others.  Claire has experience in helping many individuals with anger problems that cause interpersonal conflicts, poor job satisfaction, relationship strains and threats to individuals’ well-being.

Anger Management – Laura Fleming

Anger Management: Laura works with clients who experience negative outcomes from experiencing anger. There is nothing wrong with experiencing anger. It is a feeling just as valid as happiness, sadness, or excitement. However, how anger is expressed can lead to problems for individuals. Clearly people can be angry about many things, however, for example, feeling angry because someone made you a latte instead of a cappuccino is o.k. if it means you can go and ask for your proper order with the outcome being that you are happy. If you feel you cannot communicate this and put up with the latte you might feel worthless and unhappy or if you choose to communicate by raising your voice, throwing your coffee, or hitting someone, then you are likely to 1) not have coffee, 2) potentially get into legal trouble, and 3) the original issue of the wrong coffee is not going to be resolved. Laura can help you identify your way of expressing anger and developing healthier ways to express if required.

Counselling Approach: Laura works from a client-centred perspective – listening to the story of the client and letting the client set the goals, whilst utilising her psychological skills to assist the client to develop their own skills to achieve their goals. This can incorporate aspects of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) including Mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing and Narrative Therapy. She is experienced in working with young people from various cultural backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander.

Anger Management – Dr Catherine Hynes

Anger Management: Managing our emotions can present a challenge, and many people have difficulties controlling anger. Anger management difficulties can show up with anger directed towards others, directed towards oneself, or both. When the anger is directed externally, a person may find themselves having freqeuent conflict and arguments, lashing out at inanimate objects, animals or other people. In serious cases, a person may find themselves in trouble with the law. When the anger is self-directed, a person may find themselves criticising or running themselves down, punishing themselves or hurting themselves.

Counselling Approach: I work with people in a warm and compassionate way to help them understand the causes and triggers for their anger, and to develop alternative means of expressing themselves that don’t cause so much internal and external conflict. This may involve examining current thoughts, behaviours and sensations, and using a cognitive behavioural therapy approach. Where the anger is a long-standing problem and the causes originated in childhood or adolescence, therapy may involve healing those old injuries using a schema focused approach. If a person is extremely self-critical, therapy may involve developing compassion and empathy for oneself, using a compassion focused therapy approach.
