Anger Management for Children & Teens – Leia Redman

Leia Redman  Quals: B. Psych; M. Psych (Clinical); MAPS; CCLIN

Anger Management for Children & Teens: Anger is a normal human emotion that everyone feels from time to time (e.g. a teenager feels angry because they were not allowed to attend a party). It cannot be controlled in any way as it is a feeling that comes and goes based on an experience. Aggression is the behaviour that often arises when we feel anger (e.g. the teenager lashes out by yelling and slamming the door). Alternatively, Assertiveness is an effective form of communication which allows you to state your point of view and feelings, while respecting others (i.e. expressing yourself without becoming aggressive and hurting someone). Therapy involves assisting the client to understand these concepts and how to manage them.

Psychological Therapy Approach: Leia uses evidence based therapeutic techniques in her treatment with clients. For Anger Management, understanding contributing factors can help parents and children/teens work on alleviating pressure from their lives. Treatment specifically for children/teens will combine Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. Strategies include: Learning to identify the signs and triggers of Anger; Learning the physiological changes that occur due to anger; learning when to have downtime in their room; Visualisation techniques; Progressive Muscle Relaxation; Deep Breathing; Mindfulness; Impulse Control; Effective Communication Skills (e.g. learning how to be Assertive); Emotional Regulation Skills (learning what to do with uncomfortable emotions); and Conflict Resolution. Specific Parent Strategies will also be addressed during the sessions.

Anger Management – Dr David Wells

Dr David Wells      Quals: B Psych (Hons), Dip Prof Couns, D Psych (Clin Geropsychology).

Anger Management: Anger is normal, but sometimes the behaviours that go with that anger are damaging to ourselves, others or property. It is these wrong behaviours that we seek to alter in anger management.

Counselling Approach: Awareness and the earnest desire to change are important factors in anger management. It is about learning to behave in the way that we want to behave, not the way we behave by default. The key is: STOP – Think – Then do or speak; and by thinking can we soften the response to the situation that has made us angry.

Anger management – Cobus Kleynhans

Cobus Kleynhans     Quals: BA (Hons), MA (Clin Psych)

Anger management: Anger management research shows that problematic aggression, especially when it results in harming others or the destruction of property, can be attributed to two main issues. Firstly, becoming myopically focused on achieving an outcome (that is, having tunnel vision in relation to an outcome). And secondly, taking things personally (taking things to heart) is strongly associated with problematic levels of aggression.

Counselling Approach: Undertaking a close examination of the underlying reasons that render you more likely to ‘taking things personally’ is really at the heart of the treatment for anger issues.

Anger Management – Dr Rose Gillett

Dr Rose Gillett      Quals: B Psych (Hons), D Psych (Clin), MAPS

Anger Management: Anger is a normal, natural emotion that is expressed when events are out of our control, or do not go according to plan. The experience of anger can be taught as “unacceptable” in early life, leading us to feel that we must “control” it so as not to feel or express it. This perspective of anger management can then lead to overexpressing anger, due to the tight restrictions on ourselves, and stop us recognizing critical explosion points.

Counselling Approach: Rose works from Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) perspectives to work with anger expression and management, helping her clients to recognize early warning signs and put strategies in place to prevent overflow. Rose uses these strategies to help her clients come to accept anger as a normal emotion, and developing a healthier relationship with it for the sake of the self and others.
